If you’ve happily been eating dairy free cheese for quite some time now, aren’t actually dairy free, but want to branch out into other areas, why don’t you swap your cow’s milk for something else? We’re all so spoiled for choice these days that it’s actually not hard to find a dairy-free version of milk. Here are just four options for you to try out today…

Soy milk

This is a brilliant replacement for cow’s milk because it’s high in both protein and calcium, so perfect if you’re lactose intolerant. It is a bit thicker than cow’s milk so may take a bit of getting used to but it’s perfect for drinks like smoothies because it’s rich and flavourful.

Almond milk

This is made from water and ground almonds, and is one of the most popular dairy-free milk options around. Try it with your cereal in the morning or mix it in with your coffee for a delicious drink. You’ll also be happy to hear that it’s got fewer calories in it than skimmed milk!

Coconut milk

This a great alternative to cow’s milk, although we wouldn’t perhaps use it in our coffee in the morning. Use it in your cooking (particularly if you’re making Thai dishes) or mix it in with a smoothie or two in the afternoon.  Sebastian Beaton, from Two Kitchen Junkies, has written a very informative article about coconut.

Rice milk

This is made from brown rice and water, and while its nutrient levels are lower than other options, it can still be used as an alternative if you have allergies or are lactose intolerant.
