New year, new you.

2019 is upon us, and with it people the world over are making New Year’s Resolutions. Typically these include Dry January, but this year over 2.66 million Brits are set to ditch meat and dairy in January by signing up for Veganuary.

What is Veganuary?

Veganuary is a registered charity that seeks to change public attitudes and provide all the information and support needed to make their transition to veganism as simple, and enjoyable as possible.

A reported 14,000 signed up on Sunday 30th December 2018 alone. Each year since the movement began back in 2014 it’s participants have doubled, with a total of more than 250,000 people across 193 countries signing up annually.

Rich Hardy, head of campaigns at Veganuary says: “In 2018 there wasn’t a week that went by without veganism hitting the headlines, whether it was a magazine editor being fired, or Waitrose launching a new range of products. Vegan products are getting a lot better and it is becoming a lot more convenient to have a tasty plant-based diet.”

Celebrity interest

Various celebs have pledged their support, and numerous restaurants and institutions throughout the UK and outwith will be running events to celebrate and raise awareness.

Wildlife presenter Chris Peckham has been announced as the latest Veganuary Ambassador, alongside the impressive list of other existing famous ambassadors such as actors Evanna Lynch and Peter Egan, TV hosts Sarah-Jane Crawford and Jasmine Harman, comedians Sara Pascoe and Carl Donnelly, and chef Derek Sarno.

What better time to make the switch?

With this volume of support, there’s never been a better time to consider making the switch to vegan eating. It’s a more sustainable lifestyle choice and we’re excited to see interest increasing year-on-year here at Bute Island.
